What’s different west of town

Pueblo West started in 1969 as a planned community on former ranch land, about seven miles west of the city along Highway 50. Most of what matters for your air conditioner is the same as in town. A few things aren’t:

TopicPueblo West
Electric utilitySplit: Black Hills Energy mostly north of Highway 50, San Isabel Electric mostly south. In the city, it’s Black Hills.
Power shutoffsBlack Hills runs a Public Safety Power Shutoff program for extreme wind and fire danger. San Isabel said in 2024 it doesn’t plan pre-emptive shutoffs unless government agencies direct one during extreme weather or an active fire.
Cooling rebatesDepend on your utility. Black Hills lists 2026 rebates for high-efficiency central AC and evaporative coolers; San Isabel members should ask the co-op what’s current.
PermitsPueblo County’s building division (since January 1, 2026), not the city’s Southern Colorado Building Department.
Housing ageNothing here predates 1969. In the city, about one in five homes was built before 1950.
ElevationAround 5,000 feet, and higher in places, versus about 4,700 in the city.

Why your utility matters for your AC

Outages first. If the AC and everything else in the house is dead, check with your electric utility before calling us. Knowing whether you’re a Black Hills or San Isabel customer tells you where to look, and whether a planned shutoff could be the reason.

After the power comes back, give the system about five minutes — many thermostats delay the compressor restart — and make sure the thermostat is still on Cool. A tripped AC breaker, or an outdoor unit that hums without starting, is where we come in. See AC won’t turn on.

Replacement planning. Rebate rules differ by utility, so it’s worth knowing which one you have before you choose equipment. Our replacement page covers the details.

Newer houses still need care

A house built in the 1990s or 2000s can easily be on its second air conditioner by now — central AC typically lasts around 15 to 20 years. If yours is original to a house of that age, it’s worth having it looked at before the next long run of 90-degree days. If your home also has a swamp cooler or a mini-split, we service those too.

Questions we hear

Do you charge extra to come out to Pueblo West?

Pueblo West (81007) is part of our regular service area, alongside every Pueblo ZIP from 81001 to 81012. What a repair costs depends on the problem, the parts and the timing — the technician goes over it with you before starting.

How do I know whether I’m a Black Hills or San Isabel customer?

Your electric bill says. As a rule of thumb from the Pueblo West Metropolitan District, Black Hills Energy serves mostly north of Highway 50 and San Isabel Electric mostly south — but the line isn’t exact, so go by the bill.

Do I need a permit for a new AC in Pueblo West?

Yes. Pueblo West is unincorporated Pueblo County, so since January 1, 2026 permits go through the county’s own building division — not the Southern Colorado Building Department that now handles the City of Pueblo. The licensed contractor pulls the mechanical permit.
