AC leaking water
Water around the indoor unit almost always traces back to the condensate drain. Shut the cooling off to stop the overflow, then call us to clear it and find out why it backed up.

Stop the water first
- Turn cooling off at the thermostat. No cooling, no new condensate.
- Mop up and protect what’s nearby. Move boxes, rugs and anything stored next to the unit. If the indoor unit is in the attic and water is coming through the ceiling, put a bucket under it and keep people away from any light fixture that’s dripping.
- Look for ice. If the copper lines are frosted, the “leak” may be a frozen coil melting. That has its own fix — see frozen coil.
Why it leaks
| Clogged drain line | The most common cause. Dirt, dust, slime and mold build up in the line — Trane even lists spider webs. Water backs up into the pan and over the edge. |
|---|---|
| Tripped float switch | If your system has one, it shuts the AC off when water rises. A “dead” AC with a full pan is often this. A shutdown right in the heat of the day is a classic sign. |
| Cracked or rusted drain pan | The pan can’t hold water even when the drain is clear. |
| Disconnected drain fitting | A line that’s been bumped loose or a fitting that has separated dumps water right beside the unit. |
| Failed condensate pump | Basement and closet installs without a gravity drain use a small pump. When it quits, the reservoir overflows. |
| Melting ice | A frozen coil thawing out can overwhelm the pan. |
What we do on the visit
Our technician clears the drain line along its whole length, flushes the pan, and checks that water actually leaves the house. Then we test the float switch so it will trip next time, look at the pan for cracks or rust, and check the condensate pump if there is one.
Typical U.S. range for drain line cleaning: $75–$200, per Angi, October 2026 — a national figure, not a Pueblo quote. Your exact price comes after diagnosis.
Because a clogged drain often shows up alongside a dirty filter or coil, we look at airflow too. An inspected, flushed condensate drain is also on the ENERGY STAR maintenance checklist — one reason a spring tune-up heads off a lot of midsummer leak calls.
Questions we hear
Where does the water come from in a dry place like Pueblo?
Even in dry air, the indoor coil pulls some moisture out as it cools. That water drips into a pan and runs out through a drain line. It’s less water than you’d see in a humid climate, but on long run days it adds up — and a drain line that only trickles is easy for dust and slime to clog.
Can I bypass the float switch so the AC keeps running?
Please don’t. The float switch is the only thing standing between a clogged drain and water damage to the ceiling or floor below the unit. Clear the drain and the switch resets; bypass it and the next overflow lands on your house.
My furnace is leaking water in summer. Is the furnace broken?
Probably not. When central air is paired with a gas furnace, the AC’s indoor coil usually sits right on top of the furnace, so a clogged AC drain shows up as water around the furnace. A high-efficiency furnace also makes its own condensate, so the technician checks both drains.
