Typical price ranges

These are typical U.S. ranges from national cost guides, each shown with its source and the month the guide was published or last updated. They’re national figures — not a Pueblo quote and not our price list. Your exact price comes after the technician diagnoses your system, and you hear it before any work starts.

Where your repair lands in a range — or outside it — comes down to the five things below.

The five things that set the price

1. Which part failed

This is the big one. Electrical parts like a run capacitor or a contactor are small, quick replacements. A blower or condenser fan motor is a larger part with more labor. A refrigerant leak means finding the leak, repairing it and recharging the system. A failed compressor or a leaking indoor coil sits at the top — big enough that comparing against replacement is part of the conversation.

2. The refrigerant in your system

R-22No new production or import since 2020. Servicing relies on recovered and reclaimed supply, which is finite — so refrigerant work on these systems keeps getting more expensive.
R-410AStill used to service existing equipment, but it’s no longer allowed in newly manufactured split systems, which can affect price and availability over time.
R-454B / R-32Newer A2L refrigerants that need technicians trained and equipped for them.

3. The system’s age

Older parts can be harder to source, and an older system often has more than one weak spot. Age also changes the math on a big repair: putting a compressor into a 17-year-old R-22 system is a different decision than putting one into a 5-year-old unit.

4. Access

An outdoor unit on a pad beside the house is straightforward. An air handler in a hot attic, a tight closet or a crawlspace takes longer. A roof-mounted evaporative cooler means ladder work and safety setup.

5. Timing

Nights, weekends and holidays can cost more than a regular weekday visit. When it’s 100 degrees and someone in the house is vulnerable, that’s worth it. When it isn’t urgent, a weekday slot is the cheaper choice.

Ways to keep the bill down

  • Do the five-minute checks first: thermostat mode and batteries, the breaker (reset once), the outdoor disconnect, and the filter. Our won’t-turn-on page walks through them.
  • Turn it off when it’s telling you to. Running with a frozen coil or a humming, stalled outdoor fan can turn a small repair into a compressor.
  • Book a spring tune-up. Catching a weak capacitor or a clogging drain in April is cheaper than an after-hours call in July.
  • Check rebates before replacing. Black Hills Energy lists 2026 rebates for qualifying central AC and evaporative coolers, and Colorado’s heat pump credit applies at purchase through a registered contractor.

Permits on replacements

Installing a new system requires a mechanical permit. The licensed contractor pulls the mechanical permit — through the Southern Colorado Building Department inside the City of Pueblo, or Pueblo County’s building division in Pueblo West and other unincorporated areas. That permit is part of a replacement quote.

Questions we hear

Are the ranges on this page your prices?

No. They’re typical U.S. ranges from published cost guides, shown with the source and month so you can check them yourself. They aren’t a Pueblo quote or our price list, and two homes with the same symptom can need very different repairs. The technician diagnoses the system and tells you what the repair involves and what it costs before any work starts.

Will I know the price before the work starts?

Yes. You hear what failed, what fixing it involves, and the cost, and then you decide. If the repair is large and the system is old, we’ll also tell you if replacement deserves a look.

Does it cost more at night or on a weekend?

After-hours, weekend and holiday visits can cost more than a weekday appointment. If the house is safe to wait in and nobody is at risk from the heat, ask about the next regular-hours slot when you call — it’s your choice.
