Why swamp coolers still make sense here

An evaporative cooler pulls outside air through wet pads; the water evaporates and the air comes out cooler. It’s most effective in dry climates — which is exactly what Pueblo has for most of the summer — and it’s why Colorado State University’s Live Smart Colorado program calls it a good fit for Colorado’s dry air.

Pueblo’s housing reflects that. Browse homes for sale around town and you’ll find plenty listed with evaporative cooling, and some with evaporative cooling and central air in the same house. Black Hills Energy, the city’s electric utility, includes high-efficiency evaporative coolers in its 2026 rebate program.

The trade-offs are real, though: on a humid day a cooler can’t do as much, and it needs more regular care than an air conditioner.

When the cooler isn’t cooling

What you noticeLikely cause
Air moves, but it’s warm and dryThe pads aren’t getting wet: a failed pump, a clogged water distributor, a stuck float valve, or the water supply turned off.
Pads wet, still weak coolingPads clogged with scale and minerals, which blocks airflow; or simply a humid day.
Little or no airA broken or slipping belt, a failed blower motor, or a motor that’s overheating and shutting off.
Water dripping from the roof unit or down the wallA float valve that won’t shut off, an overflowing pan, or a rusted-through pan.
Musty or swampy smellStale water, algae or mineral buildup; bleed-off not working.

Roof work on a hot afternoon is no place for a ladder accident. If the fix involves climbing up, let our technician handle it.

Typical U.S. range for a swamp cooler repair: $104–$299, per Angi, September 2026 — a national figure, not a Pueblo quote. Your exact price comes after diagnosis.

Spring start-up, fall shutdown

Spring

  • Reconnect and check the water supply line and float valve.
  • Replace worn, torn or scale-crusted pads.
  • Clean the pan and test the pump and water distribution.
  • Check the belt, pulleys and blower motor.
  • Make sure bleed-off is working, to keep minerals from building up.

Through the season, the U.S. Department of Energy advises checking the pads, pump and reservoir regularly while the cooler is in use.

Fall

Manufacturers call for draining the cooler and its water supply line at the end of the season, and activating any drain-down before freezing weather arrives. In Pueblo, that can be earlier than you’d think: the city recorded its earliest measurable snow on September 8–9, 2020, and hit −6°F on October 30, 2019 — its coldest October reading on record. A supply line left full of water can freeze and burst.

Questions we hear

Is a swamp cooler worth fixing, or should I switch to central air?

In Pueblo’s dry air, a well-kept evaporative cooler still does real work, and its repairs are usually modest — pads, a pump, a belt, a float valve. Its limits: it cools less on humid days, it needs more upkeep than an air conditioner, and it adds moisture rather than removing it. Plenty of homes here run both. If you’re weighing a switch, our technician can talk through central air or a mini-split on the same visit.

Why does my cooler smell musty?

Usually stale water and mineral or algae buildup in the pan and pads. Coolers need to bleed off or periodically flush some water to keep minerals from building up. Cleaning the pan, replacing the pads and checking the bleed-off usually clears it.

Does Black Hills Energy offer a rebate on evaporative coolers?

Its 2026 Colorado residential rebate application lists high-efficiency evaporative coolers rated at 2,500 CFM or more, for current Black Hills electric customers. Portable coolers and coolers with a vapor-compression backup don’t qualify, the unit has to cool living space (not a garage or shop), and 2026 installations must be applied for by January 31, 2027. Check the current application for amounts.
