Heat pump not cooling

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can also run in reverse. When it won’t switch over to cooling, or cools poorly, call us and we’ll track down why.

Check these before you call

  1. Thermostat on Cool, fan on Auto, setpoint below room temperature. After a cool spring night, someone may have switched it back to Heat.
  2. Try Heat mode briefly. Trane suggests this test: if the system heats but won’t cool, the reversing valve is the likely suspect. Switch back to Cool afterward.
  3. Listen at the outdoor unit when it switches modes. A working reversing-valve solenoid usually clicks or buzzes. Silence can mean a failed coil or a loose connection.
  4. Breaker and outdoor disconnect. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.
  5. Filter and clearance. Replace a dirty filter and keep about two feet clear around the outdoor unit.

What goes wrong in cooling mode

Reversing valve or solenoid

The valve directs refrigerant one way for heating and the other for cooling. A stuck valve leaves the system in the wrong mode; a failed solenoid coil means it never gets the signal to switch. Bryant notes that a stuck valve also makes the compressor work under abnormal conditions, which can shorten its life, so don’t leave it running that way.

Typical U.S. range for a heat pump reversing valve repair: $200–$650, per Angi, May 2026 — a national figure, not a Pueblo quote. Your exact price comes after diagnosis.

Refrigerant leak

Same as any air conditioner: low charge means a leak, weak cooling, and possibly a frozen indoor coil.

Electrical parts

Capacitors and contactors fail in heat pumps too, and they work year-round instead of just in summer.

Airflow

A clogged filter, blocked returns or a dirty indoor coil cut cooling in a heat pump exactly as they do in central air.

Heat pumps in Pueblo

If you’re thinking about replacing an aging air conditioner, a heat pump is worth a look: it does the cooling job and can carry some or all of the heating. Colorado’s Heat Pump Tax Credit continues in 2026 — a contractor registered with the Colorado Energy Office claims it and passes it to you as an upfront discount. More on that on our replacement page.

Winter heat pump problems — defrost, auxiliary heat, ice on the outdoor coil — are heating questions. This page sticks to keeping the house cool.

Someone feeling sick from the heat? Health first, AC second.

If anyone in the house is elderly, ill, very young, or showing signs of heat illness, don’t wait on a repair. Get them somewhere cool now: an air-conditioned home of family or friends, or an air-conditioned public building.

Call 911 for signs of heat stroke: a body temperature of 103°F or higher; hot, red, dry or damp skin; a fast, strong pulse; confusion; or passing out. While you wait, move the person somewhere cooler and cool them with wet cloths or a cool bath. Don’t give them anything to drink.

Heavy sweating, cold and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, nausea, cramps or dizziness point to heat exhaustion. Move to a cool place, loosen clothing and sip water, and get medical help if they vomit, get worse, or aren’t better within an hour.

Questions we hear

It heated fine all winter. Why won’t it cool now?

Cooling uses the same compressor and coils as heating, run in the opposite direction by the reversing valve. If the valve or its solenoid fails, the system can get stuck in one mode — often heating. Thermostat mode is the first thing to rule out, but a heat pump that heats and won’t cool points at the reversing valve.

Is a stuck reversing valve expensive?

It depends on which part failed. Sometimes it’s the solenoid coil or the wiring that tells the valve to switch, which is an electrical repair. Replacing the valve itself means opening the refrigerant system, which is a larger job — and if the system is older, worth weighing against replacement. See what drives repair cost.

Can a heat pump keep a Pueblo house cool in July?

Yes — in cooling mode a heat pump works the same way a central air conditioner does, and it’s sized the same way, with a load calculation for the house. If yours can’t keep up on a hot afternoon, the causes are the same as for any AC: airflow, a dirty coil, refrigerant charge, or sizing.
